"Bronze Bomber"

–Smallmouth Bass–

On opening day of bass season, I was fishing some rocky structure off Point Brulee where I’ve previously enjoyed success. It’s a terrific springtime bass spot because of the abundant crayfish and minnows and its proximity to good spawning habitat. My first cast provoked a strike from a small bass which quickly shook free. The next cast produced a solid hookup with a much heavier fish. A picture perfect jump was followed by dogged head shakes and strong runs for the rocky protection. Patient and steady pressure gradually brought her to my waiting hand. This bronzed beauty was better than I had originally thought. Smallmouth always give their all, and it took a little while to revive her. All the more time for me to pause and appreciate the moment.
