"Tenacious Tiger"

–Chum Salmon–

It’s a strange feeling being connected to a rampaging Chum Salmon by something as seemingly insignificant as a fly rod. Even though I make it a point to be as prepared as possible (and delight in the research) when targeting a new species, the tremendous power of this fish still caught me off guard. While fishing Lake Creek in Alaska, the Chums were brutes which nearly spooled me... twice! I quickly realized that my trusty 7 wt. rod, which had tamed so many Silvers, was just not up to the task when it came to “the tiger”. If Silvers are the Mohammed Alis of Salmon, Chums are like George Foreman. Not all game fish can generate that “electric current” which makes your knees knock. Tarpon do...Muskie do...Atlantic Salmon...sure, a really big snook-yeah. Well ladies and gentlemen, add Mr. Chumly to the list!
