"Deep Woods Brown"
It was June6th, on Michigan’s Au Sable River when my brother, Mark hooked and landed this stunning Brown Trout. We were fishing with master fly tier and guide, Jeff “Bear” Andrews out of Fuller’s North Branch Outing Club. It was during the Brown Drake hatch and this fish struck a well presented dry fly. “Bear” had tied up a special pattern just for the day...a spent Brown Drake spinner he named Gray’s Drake (yes, I’m honored). The trout was quick to reverse course and head deep into his timbered hideout. Amazingly, the light tippet held and with a little coaxing from “Bear”, we were able to net this beauty. While all Browns are special, this particular fish epitomized what I expect from the species...golden colored flanks with beautifully ringed black and scarlet spots. Its overall handsome appearance along with the exciting battle conviced me to pay tribute to Mark’s catch with this painting.
*This piece is also available as a special fly edition (30) which includes a Gray’s Drake dry fly personally tied and signed by Jeff “Bear” Andrews.
