Kenai Cradle Robber

–Dolly Varden–

While wading Quartz Creek on the Kenai Peninsula early one evening, I struck gold...or actually pink. More precisely, little pink spots on the flanks of a very handsome trout called a Dolly Varden. Upon asking a gentleman in Cooper Landing whether or not I’d have any realsitic chance of catching this fish, I was told: “Right Place...Right Time!” During the Sockeye run Dollies migrate out of Kenai Lake into its river system to gorge on salmon eggs. In those clear stream conditions, the trout were particular to the right size and color of bead as well as it having a drag free drift. I landed many of these gems that night, a couple of which stretched the tape over 22”. I was in Heaven and cannot wait to return.
