"Grand River Cannibal"
–Brown Trout–
The fact that a large brown will make a meal of its young didn't get past Joe Penich, who created the fly pattern "Baby Brown Trout". John Valk, of Grindstone Angling, and I had an interesting day fishing the Grand River in southern Ontario. This piece illustrates a beautifully colored Brown Trout striking the extremely life-like fly as it’s stripped along a rocky edge. The key to triggering strikes when streamer fishing is to retrieve the fly with a fast-paced, frantic strip while staying intensly focused. When a big fish shows, you must not hesitate or panic. Good luck with that. On this particular day the Grand River predators were in rare form. We also had a large Northern Pike nail one of the many small trout that were hooked. Unfortunately catch and release wasn’t part of his game plan.
*This piece may also be purchased at Grindstone Angling in Waterstown, Ontario, CA
