"Hiker's Reward - Grayling"

On a return trip to Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula, I had set a goal of catching the elegant and exotic Arctic Grayling. The plan was to hike 3.3 miles on the Carter Lake trail to its end at Crescent Lake, which is known for its healthy grayling population. I certainly wasn’t in the best physical condition (stage 4 lung cancer) for such a challenge and the first mile or so of this rugged trail ascended more than a thousand feet. During our hike, my Dad, brother Mark and I took many breaks to admire the incredible scenery (and to catch my breath). Along the way, we enjoyed seeing eagles, loons, mountain sheep and even a huge bull moose. The feeling of elation upon reaching the lake was exceeded only by a deep sense of personal accomplishment that I experienced while setting the hook in that first Crescent Lake grayling. After a spirited battle, I cherished the opportunity to admire and then release this stunningly beautiful fish to the “gin-clear” depths. Even though Mark and I had to work for every take, we landed about ten grayling that measured up to 18”. They varied in color, from blue to gold but each sported that unique sail-like dorsal fin and was covered with large iridescent scales. While hiking back to the car, I thanked God for our success and enjoyed a feeling of total satisfaction. All I could say was mission accomplished!
