"Light Bite"
–Walleye–
After a typically long Michigan Winter, I always look forward to getting out on the river to feel the first Walleye strike of the year. Generally it is barely perceptible. The preferred tactic is vertical jigging, and it can be an effective way to get some great fish dinners in the freezer. This painting depicts a typical Spring Walleye which has been betrayed by the “stinger” hook. The key to productive jigging is keeping your line vertical, using the lightest jig possible while maintaining bottom contact. Having cat-like reflexes is also a definite advantage. Even still, many offerings get bit without the fisherman ever feeling a thing. The many missed opportunities add excitement and camaraderie when out with my fishing buddies.
