"North Branch Brookie"

After several long months of waiting, my North Branch Au Sable River float with Jeff “Bear” Andrews was under way. I had gotten to know “Bear” by doing many of the same fly fishing shows throughout the winter. It seemed that every other weekend we were crossing paths. My brother, Mark was able to join me on this trip and, as usual, added immeasurably to the day’s fun. “Bear” introduced us to this narrow and more intimate stretch of river which offered up countless Brook Trout and a couple of nice browns. That evening, in the diminishing light, the little brookies appeared almost jeweled against the stained yet clear water. Afterwards, we spent the night at Fuller’s North Branch Outing Club and enjoyed a restful sleep, a wonderful breakfast and lively conversation with the many fly fishing guests. In this painting, I tried to capture that “jewel-like” quality of those brookies.
