"The Red Rocket"
–Mosquito Lagoon Redfish–
The Mosquito Lagoon on Florida’s east coast is surely one of the finest Redfishing destinations in the world. It’s an unusual saltwater fishery in that the tides play no major role in the feeding habits of its residents. In April 2008, I enjoyed a day of fishing with Capt. Scott Macalla, a local guide who was a pleasure to get to know. Having fished the area professionally for eight years, he’s keenly aware of the environment and the habits of this great game fish. Sight fishing is always exciting and these fish really like to eat flies. Redfish are super-charged opponents and test your tackle with long runs and incredible staying power. This painting depicts a typical, richly-colored Mosquito Lagoon Red striking one of Capt. Scott’s own creations, the RV Shrimp. This pattern enticed several nice Reds into biting that day.
