"St. Mary's Swing"
-Atlantic Salmon-
My summer’s trip north to fish the St. Mary’s River for Atlantic Salmon has become an annual foray. These amazing fish will periodically feed heavily on schools of Rainbow Smelt and Emerald Shiners. If you’re lucky and the timing’s right, atlantics will aggressively chase down and eat a properly presented streamer fly. This is by far the most exciting tactic for these incredible game fish, which can sometimes be seen crashing bait at the surface. The strike is electric and the ensuing battle will keep a nervous grin on your face for several long and glorious minutes. When they’re not in such a feisty mood, they can often be tempted to take small bead-head nymphs. As an added bonus, you may catch a few tasty Whitefish. Captain Brad Petzke, of Rivers North, has consistently proven his worth in these waters and become my “go to” guide and source of information on the fishery. He spends practically the entire season on the river and is always up to date with the best areas and techniques for the day. This painting depicts a trophy-sized salmon striking a fly called the S. S. Minnow. It’s a pattern I developed especially for the occasion. The S.S. is short for Salmo Salar - the Latin name for Atlantic Salmon which appropriately translates as “The Leaper.” *This piece can also be purchased as a special fly edition (30) that displays an authentic S.S. Minnow tied by the artist.
