"Terrible Two-Year-Old"

–Pink Salmon–

Being a Michigander, I’ve had the good fortune of catching many Pink Salmon. I’ve landed Pinks off of Point Brulee as well as several rivers which feed Lakes Huron & Superior. Only upon realizing the lifetime dream of fishing in Alaska could I appreciate the upper end potential of this unique species. Summertime finds many Alaskan rivers teeming with Pink Salmon or Humpies. As spawning time approaches, male Pinks undergo the most dramatic metamorphosis of all salmon. Chrome torpedoes morph into long-nosed, hump-backed marauders. While they’re the smallest of the five Pacific species, they seem to have a “Napoleon Complex.” One August morning, my brother Mark & I landed twin monster Pinks with humps so tall they appeared as hub caps holding in the current. This painting commemorates those two. humpies.
